Halloween Plumbing Tips – Don’t Put Those Pumpkin Guts Down Your Disposal!

You’ve put the final touches on the costumes, purchased enough candy for trick-or-treaters and found the perfect scary movie to watch on Halloween night – what’s left? The pumpkin, of course! One of the most popular symbols of the fall season and the holiday, your Halloween decor just wouldn’t be complete without a perfect pumpkin – either in your house or on your front stoop. But what are you to do with it once the day is done? While you may keep it around for a little while longer, eventually it’s going to get to the point where it just doesn’t look or smell so great any more. At this point, you may be inclined to just toss however much of it you can into your garbage disposal, but this Halloween, we hope you’ll think twice about doing so.

Putting any part of your pumpkin down the garbage disposal, especially the inside, is simply a recipe for disaster. Just as we would advise against using your garbage disposal to get rid of stringy vegetables like celery – you most certainly do not want to send any of the stringy pumpkin pulp down the drain either. Furthermore, even though you may think they are small and harmless, you are much better off disposing of the seeds in the trash can since they can easily cause a clog in your drains. In short, the answer is simple – if you don’t want your garbage disposal to haunt you after the holiday, your best bet is to keep your pumpkin far away!

This also goes for those of you who are waiting until Halloween to carve your pumpkin! Though your cut outs may be small in size, the interior and the exterior of your pumpkin is no friend to your plumbing.

Even if you take all of the precautionary measures when it comes to your plumbing, we at Ranger Plumbing & Heating know that an emergency can happen at any time, so don’t hesitate to contact us if you experience a problem this Halloween – just call 406.586.6959
